Newtown Flyers Fan Catches Cam York’s Series-Winning Stick — Then Gives It Back

Jack Brod (right) and Jake Weiner appear on 6abc Action News after Brod caught Cam York's series-winning stick following the Philadelphia Flyers' Game 6 overtime win over the Pittsburgh Penguins. Brod gave his replacement stick, signed by Cam York, to Weiner, an 18-year-old Council Rock South High School hockey player.

A recent news segment captured a moment a Newtown Flyers fans will not forget, centered on the surge of excitement after an overtime goal sealed both the game and the series, and the emotion and connection that followed, as reported by 6abc Action News.

Longtime fan Jack Brod of Newtown, 64, walked out of Game 6 with more than a win.

He caught the stick Cam York tossed after scoring the overtime goal that clinched the series for the Philadelphia Flyers against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

York meant to loft it into the crowd. It did not go as planned.

“I wanted it to be like a 60-degree trajectory, but it caught on my glove and made it like a 5-iron,” York said.

The stick came in fast, bouncing off several fans before landing across the shoulder of Brod’s wife, who had no idea York had even thrown it.

Brod reached out and grabbed it. Nobody fought him for it, which he called “shocking.”

Brod called the moment unforgettable, then faced a decision the next day.

When he learned the stick carried real meaning for York as a keepsake from the series clincher, he did not hesitate.

“It was important to Cam to have it. Way more important for him than for me,” Brod said in the 6abc interview.

That choice defined the story.

Later in the week, the Flyers brought Brod to practice in Voorhees to meet York, who returned the gesture with a signed jersey, a signed game-used stick, and playoff tickets for the next round.

York made clear the original stick was not going back into rotation.

“I’m not going to reuse it. I feel like it’d be a crime to reuse this one,” York said.

Brod took it one step further. He gave the replacement stick to Jake Weiner, an 18-year-old Council Rock High School South hockey player and family friend, so the moment carries forward.
