Democratic Party leaders are in Philadelphia this week to assess the city’s bid for hosting the 2028 Democratic National Convention, writes Mike D’Onofrio for AXIOS Philadelphia.
This high-profile event attracts national attention and thousands of visitors to the host city. DNC Chairperson Ken Martin and other party leaders will evaluate the logistical and operational aspects of Philadelphia’s bid, including whether the city has the facilities and infrastructure required to host such a large-scale event. Xfinity Mobile Arena and the Pennsylvania Convention Center are among the stops during the visit.
Additional factors under review include the city’s track record of hosting major events, its ability to raise funds, and its capacity to recruit sufficient volunteers to support uninterrupted convention operations.
Other finalists set to receive visits include Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, and Denver.
The selection process is being managed by Martin and Alex Hornbrook, the executive director of the 2024 Democratic National Convention, who will make the final decision about the host city.
Philadelphia has hosted the DNC three times, including in 2016, and has also supported major events such as Pope Francis’ visit the year before. The city is also viewed as a major Democratic hub in a crucial swing state.
