April 15 is widely known as the deadline for filing federal income tax returns, but it also serves as a critical cutoff for several other financial and tax-related actions that taxpayers often overlook.

Missing these additional deadlines can lead to lost tax-saving opportunities, interest charges, or penalties, advises DunlapSLK, a CPA and business advisory firm based in Chalfont.

One key item is the ability to make prior-year retirement contributions. Taxpayers can still contribute to a traditional or Roth IRA for the previous tax year up until April 15, potentially reducing taxable income or securing future tax-free withdrawals. Similarly, self-employed individuals and business owners may establish and fund a Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan by this date to lower their prior-year tax liability.

April 15 is also important for those who are unable to complete their tax return on time. Filing for an automatic six-month extension by this date can help avoid late-filing penalties. However, the extension only applies to filing paperwork — not to paying taxes owed — so taxpayers should still estimate and pay any liability by the deadline to minimize penalties and interest.

Additionally, the date marks the due date for the first installment of estimated taxes for the current year. Individuals with income not subject to withholding — such as self-employment earnings, dividends, or capital gains — must make these payments to avoid underpayment penalties.

Trustees and executors must also be aware that income tax returns for trusts and estates (Form 1041) are generally due by April 15 if certain income thresholds are met. Beyond these, other filings — such as gift tax returns and foreign bank account reports — may also share the same deadline.
