Ambler’s MBF Therapeutics believes the data behind its vaccines could become just as valuable as the vaccines themselves, writes Holly Quinn for Technical.ly.
The company has spent more than a decade developing a non-viral vaccine platform for animal health. According to CEO and cofounder Tom Tillett, MBF is exploring whether its detailed immune-response data could be licensed to pharmaceutical companies building artificial intelligence models.
Major drugmakers have invested billions into AI partnerships, often centered on access to structured biological datasets that help train models. MBF’s years of animal studies have produced exactly that: robust, multi-animal immunological data. While no licensing deals have been announced, early conversations with advisers and industry contacts have been encouraging, Tillett said.
The strategy builds on a long road. After initially focusing on canine cancer treatments, MBF pivoted following regulatory hurdles with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That reset led to its non-viral delivery system, which avoids the size limits of traditional virus-based platforms.
The Ambler company is also collaborating with researchers at the University of North Carolina to adapt the platform for human health, with plans to spin out a separate venture.
If successful, MBF could generate revenue not only from vaccines but from the data powering tomorrow’s AI-driven drug discovery.
