When their 1895 rowhouse began feeling too cramped, Lambertville couple Lauren Braun-Strumfels and Kyle Strumfels purchased a neglected 1970s Cape Cod, eager to transform it into their dream home, writes Zoe Rosenberg for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
“With the rowhouse, there were certain things that we just wouldn’t want to do to it, historically, to preserve the character,” said Braun-Strumfels. “This house was a total blank slate. It was neither historic nor attractive, so we felt like we could really transform it.”
Their first move was shifting the kitchen to the front part of the house, removing the rear wall to create additional living space, and inserting a Jack-and-Jill bathroom between the upstairs bedrooms.
A few years later, they moved into phase two of the renovation, adding 1,000 square feet with a new entry and an “adult wing,” as they describe it, anchored by a walk-in closet that connects to an en-suite bathroom. The en-suite water closet serves as a powder room as well, maintaining a circular flow throughout the wing.
The original front porch was enclosed and converted into a shared office, while a new carport gives the home a distinctly mid-century touch.
