For journalists Gwen Shrift and Terry Nau, their careers were their passion, and an unexpected encounter late in their lives led them to love, writes Jo Ciavaglia for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Following his college years, Nau became a reporter, working at the Bucks County Courier Times and then the Doylestown Intelligencer.
A job with a Pawtucket, Rhode Island, newspaper eventually took him up north, where he worked his way up to sports editor.
When he eventually retired, Nau decided to write books and self-published a story inspired by his experience in the Vietnam War. “We Walked Right Into It” tells the real stories of 15 Pennsbury High School graduates who served in the war and were killed in the line of duty.
Hoping to promote his story, Nau called the Courier Times and was soon put in contact with Gwen Shrift.
The pair spoke over the phone for an interview, and it wasn’t long before conversations drifted to other topics.
Not long after, Nau decided to return to his hometown, and the two met for lunch.
“I didn’t consider it a date,” Shrift said. “And it turned out to be a date. A great date.”
Just three months later, Nau proposed, and the couple married three months after that, beginning an exciting new chapter of their lives together.
