For Pennsylvania State Sen. Frank Farry, the recently passed law broadening breast cancer imaging coverage for women represents a personal cause, writes Jess Rohan for the Bucks County Courier Times.
In 2023, Farry, who represents the 6th District in Bucks County, co-sponsored legislation to eliminate breast cancer imaging copays for patients at higher risk of breast cancer under insurance plans regulated by the state.
Nine months later, his wife received a breast cancer diagnosis, revealing a gap in the law that had already taken effect.
Women who were not classified as high risk, such as his wife, still faced costs. While his wife could manage, he understood that many could not.
In 2025, Farry joined forces with state Rep. Gina Curry of Upper Darby to build on the existing law, making certain that patients over 40 with only an average risk of breast cancer could access supplemental breast cancer imaging without any out-of-pocket cost.
The bill also guarantees that women under 40 can receive mammograms and follow-up imaging whenever a doctor prescribes them.
Farry and Curry’s bill was signed into law on Nov. 24 by Gov. Josh Shapiro.
