Networking: The Secret Sauce for Entrepreneurs Who Don’t Want to “Sell”

Networking can feel like eating kale: you know it’s good for you, but it’s rarely your first choice.

Yet for small business owners, solopreneurs, and entrepreneurs, networking is the secret sauce behind sustained business growth.

In business, relationships drive opportunities. For entrepreneurs and small business owners, each connection can become a collaborator, client, referral partner, or supportive voice.

By building a diverse network, business owners gain access to new insights, resources, and referrals that are essential for growth.

Offer Value First

A successful networking strategy is rooted in offering help rather than seeking it. When an entrepreneur asks, “How can I help you?” instead of “Can you help me?”, the dynamic shifts towards collaboration.

This approach creates a network that values reciprocity, trust, and mutual respect, making professional relationships more fruitful and supportive.

Volunteering for the Win

Volunteering skills within the community demonstrate value and commitment, leading others to recognize and appreciate these contributions. Volunteering is like planting seeds (definitely not kale seeds), and people remember your generosity and sincerity.

There are volunteer and Board positions available at Great Careers Network, a 501(c) (3) volunteer-run nonprofit, if you are interested in supporting networking and career education for job seekers, entrepreneurs, and career professionals. Further information is available in a previous article:

Helping peers builds a reputation as an attractor, rather than making others feel pursued for favors or sales.

Building Genuine Relationships

Networking is about building connections where both parties know, like, and trust each other, not just exchanging business cards or LinkedIn requests.

This foundation of trust is essential for partnerships, word-of-mouth marketing, and support during challenges. Entrepreneurs who engage regularly and authentically with their network are more likely to receive help when they need it, thanks to the positive impression left on others.

Regular positive engagement, whether online or in-person, keeps business owners top of mind for opportunities and referrals.

Elevating Positivity in Networking

A positive mindset is not just beneficial; it is magnetic. Others are naturally drawn to people who approach interactions with optimism, resilience, and a sense of gratitude.

This positivity encourages stronger connections. Entrepreneurs with a positive attitude attract more collaborators and opportunities.

Avoiding negativity ensures the network remains a source of encouragement and innovation, rather than a drain on energy and morale.

Approaching networking with genuine curiosity, emotional intelligence, and an appreciation for others fosters an atmosphere where everyone wants to contribute and support one another’s goals.

I hope the “Negative Nate” I met reads this article. As they say, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.” He has not yet learned to attract, and my first impression is that he is someone I would not do business with.

Action Steps for Small Business Owners

Inventory skills and offer them proactively, even outside traditional business settings. Attend community events or online networking sessions with the aim of helping and listening.

Follow up positively, express gratitude, and maintain regular, friendly contact.

Share relevant and relatable content online that resonates with fellow entrepreneurs, clients, and partners, amplifying the message of positivity – such as recipes, articles of interest, or tips.

Focusing on giving, building trust, and maintaining positivity will turn networking into a catalyst for authentic relationships and business growth for any small business owner, solopreneur, or entrepreneur.
