The West Whiteland Board of Supervisors has pushed back against Abrams Realty and Development’s Exton Square Mall mixed-use redevelopment plans, with one member calling for the revival of plans for a hotel on the site, writes Noah Zucker for BisNow.
Lawmakers expressed concerns regarding the project’s density, the township’s sewer capacity, and the future of the several historic buildings that on the site.
“This is going to be a development that’s around for the next 50 to 75 years,” said board Chair Rajesh Kumbhardare during last week’s meeting. “I don’t know whether our residents really want something like this.”
The developer plans to start building a 50,000-square-foot Main Line Health facility next year on the south side, where several historic buildings are currently located. Then, the mall will be demolished in 2027 to add over 700 homes and 280,000 square feet of retail.
An earlier version of the plans included a hotel at the site of the planned Main Line Health building, with an event space in one of the historic structures.
However, despite supervisor Jo Ann Kelton’s push to revisit those plans, ARD’s lawyer Marc Kaplin said consultants found a hotel unfeasible.
