This Scenic Trail Along the Delaware Canal Offers 60 Miles of Beauty

The Delaware Canal Towpath Trail is a beautiful recreation spot that offers plenty of activities and gorgeous views throughout the year.

Pennsylvania boasts some of the best outdoor recreation spots in the country, one of them being the Delaware Canal Towpath Trail along the Delaware Canal, writes David McElhinney for Islands.

The trail spans 60 miles, beginning in Easton and ending in Bristol. The canal itself was constructed in 1832 to allow for ferry trade.

Now, locals can enjoy the six available loop trails on the Pennsylvania and New Jersey sides of the canal.

One of the loops is around 7 miles, winding through New Hope, across Center Bridge into Stockton, down into Lambertville, and back across the bridge into New Hope.

Another popular route, coming in at 18.9 miles, starts and ends in Lumberville and brings people through Frenchtown, Uhlerstown and Bulls Island.

Visitors can marvel at the vibrant leaves in the fall or go kayaking in the summer. During the winter months, the canal freezes over and becomes a natural ice-skating rink.

Eagles, foxes and turtles are among the wildlife that can be spotted along the trail.

After enjoying some time on the towpath, people can explore the many nearby towns and their various restaurants and shops.
