The job market is challenging, and applications often vanish into the proverbial black hole, leaving candidates frustrated.
While recruiters sometimes bear the blame, the truth is that they juggle numerous open roles, have massive workloads, and receive thousands of resumes.
Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is both helping and complicating that process.
On one side, employers lean on AI-driven Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to quickly screen resumes.
On the other hand, job seekers are using AI tools to churn out resumes and cover letters at record speed.
The problem? Many of these AI-generated documents are indistinguishable from each other, making applicants blend into a pile of sameness. Some firms even flag or reject resumes that appear overly polished by AI.
Here are five pitfalls job seekers should avoid:
- Relying on AI to create resumes from scratch – Generic, buzzword-heavy content is a red flag.
- Asking AI to “rewrite” your resume without context – Leads to inaccuracies and exaggerations you can’t defend.
- Submitting auto-generated cover letters – They read flat and fail to differentiate you.
- Using words or jargon you don’t understand – If you can’t explain it in an interview, don’t include it.
- Forgetting human connection – Networking, authentic messages, and thank-you notes still matter more than algorithms.
AI can be an ally when used thoughtfully, researching roles, refining phrasing, or preparing for interviews. But it should never replace your unique story, credibility, and human touch.
The key takeaway is to strike a balance between technology and authenticity. Recruiters, not robots, hire people.
