Philadelphia Union Sportsplex Is Part of Chester Vision

Philadelphia Union hailed its new sportsplex as a way to bring people and prosperity to Chester's Delaware River waterfront.

The $100 million WSFS Bank Sportsplex Philadelphia Union was unveiled July 17 and is expected to bring 500,000 visitors annually to Chester’s Delaware River waterfront, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

It is slated to open in mid-August.

The 170,000 square-foot sports and recreation complex sits next to Subaru Park. It includes an indoor sports center and facilities for Union teams. There are courts for basketball, volleyball, and futsal, a fast-paced indoor version of soccer played on a hard court.

It’s also home to the Philadelphia Union II club that competes in the MLS Next Pro league and the Philadelphia Union Academy youth development program.

“This is more than just a sports complex,” said Jay Sugarman, principal owner of the Major League Soccer club. “It’s a symbol of growth, opportunity, and unity.”

He described the complex as a culmination of a 25-year vision.

“Back then, the waterfront was empty,” he said. “It was abandoned. There was really no future, but we imagined something different,” he said.

Now, the complex can help bring about a thriving waterfront anchored by the Philadelphia Union that would bring “hundreds of thousands of people to this historic city every year.”
