Bensalem Officials Give Green Light for New Gym at School Lane Charter School

Bensalem officials recommend approval for a new gymnasium at the School Lane Charter School campus, to be built between its existing buildings.

Bensalem Township officials have recommended approval for a new gymnasium at the School Lane Charter School campus, writes Lacey Latch for the Bucks County Courier Times.

The 25,000-square-foot gym will be constructed on a largely unused parking lot, between the school’s existing buildings along Tillman Drive.

“We’re basically taking parking that no one uses and putting the gymnasium there,” said School Lane Charter School CEO Karen Schade.

Currently, students must cross the parking lot to move between buildings. The new gym will provide a sheltered walkway for students while providing space for physical education classes and other athletic activities.

Once construction crews complete the new gym, the school will have 288 parking spots, slightly more than required by code.

The school enrolls approximately 460 students and employs about 65 full-time staff members. When it first opened for the 2015–2016 school year, the goal was to build the gym by its tenth anniversary, but the pandemic delayed those plans.

“We’re a little behind with the timing of this but we’re very excited about the possibility of not having to worry about the kids being outside,” said Schade.
