Two Bucks County high school students were recently named National Merit Scholars, receiving scholarships awarded to only a select number of students nationwide, writes Dino Ciliberti for the Patch.
The first winner is Alyssa Loudon, a student attending Neshaminy High School and living in Levittown.
The second winner is Gregory J. Galonsky, a Yardley resident attending Pennsbury High School.
The students will receive annual scholarships ranging from $500 to $2,000 for each of their four undergraduate years.
Loudon will be attending Lehigh University in Bethlehem, where she will pursue a degree in chemical engineering. Galonsky will pursue a degree in computer science at the University of Pittsburgh.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced that it chose winners based on their “accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies.”
The selection is based on PSAT scores, grades, an essay, student involvement in their school and community, and a letter of recommendation.
A total of 3,600 college-sponsored winners received the scholarships. The corporation has already announced many of the winners and will name additional ones in July.
The selection committee chose these winners from an initial pool of 2 million students, narrowing it down to 16,000 semifinalists.
