A Toughkenamon polo club will host Pennsylvania’s first ever yearling horse show, writes Linda Stein for Delaware Valley Journal.
The Pennsylvania Horse Breeders Association (PHBA), who manages thoroughbred racing across the state, will organize the show. The event will take place on Saturday, June 21 at Brandywine Polo Club.
“Yearling” refers to horses between the ages of one and two. The horses will be judged by former PHBA leader Russell Jones.
Participating yearlings will be categorized as either colts, geldings, or fillies. Later, the top two horses from each class will advance to the show’s championship.
Over $5,000 in prizes and awards awaits winners throughout the show.
Participant Lizzie Merryman plans to show her chestnut-colored colt at the inaugural event. Merryman owns Buffalo Run Ranch, a horse farm in Chester County.
Merryman shared it can be difficult to train yearlings, as they go through a “teenager stage.” However, Merryman also said that the upcoming yearling show benefits the horses themselves. Having the horses out in the public is good for their mental and physical health.
PHBA executive secretary Brian Sanfratello described the upcoming show as an exciting opportunity to display the excellence of Pennsylvania horses. Sanfratello said, “We encourage the public to come out and enjoy a family-friendly day at Brandywine Polo Club and see some of our Pennsylvania-bred horses up close.”
