Cami Shaul of Bucks County was featured on The Kelly Clarkson Show, where she discussed her work with Labeled and Loved, an organization that supports moms with special-needs kids, reports NBC10 Philadelphia.
Shaul talked about the realities of raising a special-needs child and the caretaker burnout that is so common.
Shaul’s son, Jeffrey, who is 22, was first diagnosed with a hearing impairment when he was nine weeks old. By the age of four, he had received several additional diagnoses, including being on the autism spectrum, ADD, and a global developmental delay.
“So caregiving to me, looks like my entire life,” said Shaul. “I call him my forever nester. I won’t ever really be an empty nester.”
Being a full time caregiver, Shaul came to a point where she felt like she was drowning during the pandemic.
“I ran across Labeled and Loved at their Weekend of Hope retreat that was in San Antonio that year, and I kept thinking ‘that’s me, that’s me,’” said Shaul. “I just decided to go. And this retreat changed everything because what I found was that I was in a room with women who really understood my life.”
