Even as Wawa expands, seemingly everywhere, two more of its Philadelphia stores are closing, writes Michaelle Bond for The Philadelphia Inquirer.
The two Northeast stores are within two miles of each other. A store at 6506 Frankford Ave. will close April 22, followed by a store at 6919 Castor Ave. on April 24.
The newest stores add to a list of 11 that have already closed since 2020 in the city of Philadelphia. Most were in Center City.
A Wawa spokesman did not give specifics on the closures, only that the decision was reached “after careful and extensive evaluations.”
A smaller urban concept store that opened in 2020 closed in December at 16th and Rainstead Streets in Center City because its smaller size was not able to give customers the experience they expected, the spokesperson said.
Last July, Wawa closed its oldest Philadelphia store in Port Richmond after 45 years, again because the store “cannot deliver the experience customers deserve or continue to meet performance expectations.”
One city store closed a year ago when the landlord opted not to renew its lease.
In 2022, Wawa cited “safety and security challenges” when it closed two Center City stores.
