Monkey’s Uncle in Doylestown Offers Nostalgia and Opportunities for Young Adults with Special Needs

Monkey’s Uncle in Doylestown, founded by Derrick Morgan and his wife 15 years ago, sells retro, vintage-inspired sports apparel while creating opportunities for all.

Monkey’s Uncle in Doylestown offers a unique selection of retro sports apparel, while creating opportunities for all, writes Howard Monroe for CBS News Philadelphia.

The shop was founded 15 years ago by Derrick Morgan and his wife, and has quickly become a local institution.

“We are a retro vintage inspired Philly sports boutique,” said Morgan. “We’re selling memories and nostalgia. We want to tap into the old-school stuff: the Chase Utley, the Mike Schmidt, the Brian Dawkins, and Randall Cunningham. Our focus is really on the throwback because who doesn’t love the baby blue and maroon or Kelly Green?”

But the shop is also on a mission to support young adults with special needs, inspired by the Morgans’ son, who is autistic.

“High school students with special needs that come to us five days a week and they’re learning how to ring a register, how to fold, how to sticker,” said Morgan. “They’re shipping our web sales all over the world.”

Some of the sales feature creations made by students through Monkey on a Mission, an initiative launched by Morgan to teach them how to create, print, and sell their artwork.
