The 1951 murder of a newborn baby girl, found stuffed inside a suitcase a mile south of New Hope, is one of Pennsylvania’s oldest cold cases, writes Jo Ciavaglia for the Bucks County Courier Times.
Little is known about the baby, including her name, parents, and place of birth. But it is certain that she was murdered. When she was found, women’s pajama bottoms were tightly bound around her neck and face.
Baby Jane Doe is believed to be Pennsylvania’s youngest documented murder victim and the oldest known unsolved murder in Bucks County.
She was found in a suitcase in Primrose Creek along River Road on September 13, 1951. It was determined that the baby was between seven and ten days old.
Her death predates the 1957 case of the “Boy in the Box,” the most well-known unidentified child murder victim in the country’s history.
Over seven decades after her death, law enforcement is still trying to find answers about her murder. The criminal investigation is still considered open by the Pennsylvania State Police. Baby Jane Doe’s information was added to NamUs – a national government database for missing, unidentified, and unclaimed individuals – last year.
