Philadelphia’s summer of 2024 was one for the record books.

Thanks to a combination of major events, a thriving hospitality sector, and expanded international travel options, the Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau (PHLCVB) announced record-breaking tourism numbers that outpaced pre-pandemic levels. With more than 1.6 million hotel room nights sold in Center City between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend β€” a remarkable 8.2 percent increase from summer 2023 β€” Philadelphia reaffirmed its status as a premier destination for both domestic and international travelers.

At the PHLCVB’s Annual Luncheon at The Franklin Institute, the organization celebrated these achievements with more than 850 hospitality professionals and emphasized the vital role they play in creating an unforgettable experience for visitors.

β€œThis city is a tapestry of history, culture, art, and innovation β€” and every single one of you plays a part,” said PHLCVB President and CEO Gregg Caren. β€œPhilly is more than just a city β€” it’s an experience that calls people back time and again.”

A Summer of Unprecedented Growth

Philadelphia’s tourism economy thrived this summer, fueled by significant events and strategic travel initiatives. Tourism Economics reported that hotel bookings during the season hit an all-time high, with Revenue Per Available Room (RevPAR) increasing by an extraordinary 51 percent compared to summer 2023. The success was largely attributed to major events that brought thousands of attendees from across the globe:

  • WrestleMania XL, WWE’s signature event, held over two nights at Lincoln Financial Field.
  • The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference with over 12,000 people from over 100 countries.
  • The Convention of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the Wells Fargo Center with over 3,000 delegates from nearly 30 countries.
  • The Liverpool/Arsenal soccer match at Lincoln Financial Field, which drew both international and domestic fans.

International Travel Boosts Visitor Spending

Philadelphia’s international tourism saw a significant jump in 2024 that was driven by expanded air connectivity and the city’s growing reputation as a global destination. Inbound arrivals at Philadelphia International Airport increased by nearly seven percent between May and August, thanks in part to American Airlines’ introduction of three new nonstop routes to Copenhagen, Nice, and Naples. These routes contributed to an eight percent increase, year over year, in international visitor spending during that time frame.

Year to date in 2024, international visitor spending has surged by 27 percent compared to 2023, reflecting longer stays and greater engagement with Philadelphia’s attractions, dining, and cultural experiences. The city’s global appeal continues to grow, with American Airlines announcing that its 2024 seasonal routes will return in 2025, along with new flights to Milan and Edinburgh. These additions are expected to further solidify Philadelphia’s position as a key transatlantic gateway.

Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle L. Parker said that tourism, conventions, and events support more than 80,000 workers in the region. She thanked the PHLCVB and said that record-setting numbers come at exactly the right time.

β€œThanks to the work of the PHLCVB, Philadelphia’s profile around the world has been raised by hosting major conventions, sporting events, and international visitors,” said Parker. β€œAll this hard work is essential as we gear up to welcome the world in 2026 β€” inviting everyone to experience our city’s history, culture, and hospitality.”
