Northlandz, The World’s Largest Model Railroad, is Just Across the River
Northlandz, the world’s largest model railroad, is located in nearby Flemington, New Jersey, reports the Great Big Story for MSN.
The model railroad boasts 40,000 feet of track, 4,000 buildings, and 400 bridges. It is a passion project of Bruce Zaccagnino.
“Well, I guess, you know, everybody has a passion for something,” he said. “My thing was trains. I had trains around the Christmas tree as a kid, wherever I lived.”
Zaccagnino has been working on Northlandz for nearly two decades. Over time, he added five basements to his house.
“And from that, I got fairly good at making mountains and bridges and design work,” he said.
Once the model railroad had reached record size, he decided to share it with the world.
“So we tore it all down, bought this land, built Northlandz,” said Zaccagnino. “Any given day we run between 85 and 90 trains.”
Many of the mountains that make up the model are three-and-a-half stories high. Most of the elements are built from scratch.
“It’s an artistic endeavor, it’s a gift to the world of what I can do, and it makes a lot of people happy,” said Zaccagnino.
