Philadelphia’s Newest Bakery Opens in Mount Airy
Philadelphia bakers Dayna Evans and Sam Carmichael have officially opened the doors to the city’s newest bakery: Downtime Bakery in Mount Airy, writes Kristin Hunt for PhillyVoice.
For Evans, her first storefront comes after growing her following by selling sourdough bread at pop-ups and her East Mount Airy home.
Downtime Bakery will sell bagels, bread, buns, sandwiches, cookies, and pie, in addition to coffee from Poem Roasting.
At the new bakery, Evans and Carmichael will put an emphasis on locally grown ingredients. Most of their produce will be sourced from Weavers Way Farms and their flour will be sourced from Castle Valley Mill in Doylestown, among other businesses.
They will also showcase and sell art from Philly area creatives in their cafe.
Prior to starting Downtime Bakery, Evans got her training at Machine Shop and the Ten Belles bakery in Paris. However, Evans and Carmichael both participated in pop-ups at Bloomsday, Cielo Philly, and Together Skateboarding. This is in addition to organizing “baker’s hangs” at Mighty Bread Co. and Dead King Bread.
Downtime Bakery’s storefront is part of the Winston Commons, a revitalization project that was spearheaded by the Mt. Airy CDC in 2004.
