Jobs that focus on helping others, contributing to the community, or pursuing personal passion rank as the most fulfilling in the country, writes Andrew Van Dam for The Washington Post.

The Washington Post analyzed data from the Civic Engagement and Volunteering Supplement, part of the Census Bureau’s Current Population Survey, to identify the most fulfilling jobs in America.

Respondents were asked to agree or disagree with four statements: pride in working for their employer, deriving main life satisfaction from work, workplace contributions to the community, and personal contributions to the community through work.

The most fulfilling overall job, which ranked highest on all measures, was clergy as they bring pride, satisfaction, and contribute to the community.

Community and Social Services occupations such as social workers, ranked high for community contribution and personal satisfaction, as did Education, Training, and Library occupations.

Occupations in Protective Services, including police officers and firefighters, reported significant pride in their work.

Government and nonprofit workers rank high on measures of community impact, while the self-employed score highly on pride in their work and life satisfaction.

Jobs with lower fulfillment include Food Service and Manufacturing or Blue-Collar Production occupations.
