As the Region’s Pillar of Positive News, American Community Journals Celebrates 10 Years of Local Impact
The media industry has undergone an unprecedented transformation in the last quarter-century, with traditional news outlets facing significant challenges that threaten their survival.
A steady decline in readership and viewership has, over time, forced major newspapers, network news, and broadcast media to mine current events for sensational angles that can attract more attention to their outlets. In turn, that if-it-bleeds-it-leads ethos leaves too many positive stories on the cutting-room floor.
Ten years ago, Ken Knickerbocker founded American Community Journals to fill the growing void of news that uplifts in his corner of the world, southeastern Pennsylvania. It began with the debut of VISTA Today in 2014, followed by MONTCO Today and DELCO Today in 2016, then BUCKSCO Today in 2020, and ultimately PHILADELPHIA Today in 2023.
All throughout its evolution from a single publication to a robust network of hyperlocal journals, ACJ has made a lasting impact across the region, keeping residents informed, engaged, and connected to the news and stories that matter most to them.
As ACJ celebrates its 10th anniversary, its success speaks to both the public’s appetite for positive news and the company’s growing influence in the marketing and public relations arena — the latter courtesy of its multiple platforms that serve as unique, indispensable delivery vehicles for its affiliate partners’ content.
“The shift in media priorities from informing to captivating has steered traditional media toward sensationalism, toward focusing on the negative,” said Knickerbocker. “At ACJ, we champion positive storytelling.”
It didn’t take VISTA Today long after it launched to become a part of the fabric of Chester County. Ditto for the four other platforms in their respective counties. To date, they have published a total of nearly 90,000 stories.
“We’ve proven that readers are drawn to news that reflects the reality that the Delaware Valley is a great place to live, work, and play,” said Knickerbocker. “Before ACJ, too many of the stories that illustrate the success and prosperity around us weren’t being shared.”
ACJ’s 10th anniversary is an opportunity for the company to reflect on its journey and its role in an evolving media landscape. By embracing digital publishing and remaining paywall-free, ACJ’s widening reach knows no bounds. Through its online presence and social media channels, ACJ connects with readers wherever they are, delivering timely and relevant news directly to their screens.
To imagine what the future holds for ACJ, consider the company’s trajectory over the last two years. In 2022, ACJ generated a then-record 7.56 million pageviews; that number more than doubled to 15.8 million in 2023. Currently, ACJ is on pace to record 22 million pageviews this year.
“Our goal has always been to be more than just a news outlet,” said Knickerbocker. “We’re here to be a part of the community, to amplify voices, to inspire positivity. Reaching this 10-year mark is a testament to the hard work of everyone at ACJ and the incredible support of our affiliate partners and dedicated readers.”
