St. Luke’s University Health Network plans to double the size of the emergency department of its Upper Bucks Campus in Milford Township.

St. Luke’s University Health Network is getting ready to expand the emergency department of its Upper Bucks Campus in Milford Township, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

The $8 million, 11,000-square-foot project will double the size of the emergency department and add an additional 12 new patient treatment bays to the 16 that are already there.

According to Dennis Pfleiger, president of St. Luke’s Upper Bucks Campus, once it is completed, the project will add 20 full-time jobs, including board-certified emergency medicine physicians, nurses, and technicians.

“We are growing our ER capacity in response to [the needs of] our patients,” said Pfleiger.

The emergency department has been recording steadily rising patient volumes that have put it past its capacity to handle the 22,000 annual visits. That demand is expected to continue growing, as baby boomers and seniors represent the largest segment of the population in the community served by the hospital.

The expansion will allow the Upper Bucks campus, which opened in 2019, to treat up to 40,000 patients per year at its emergency department.
