A new study found that Philadelphia is the safest U.S. city for pedestrians with 1.18 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents in 2022.

Philadelphia is the least dangerous U.S. city for pedestrians, according to a new study by Forbes Advisors, writes Christy Bieber for the publication.

To determine the safest cities for pedestrians, Forbes Advisors examined four key metrics: fatal crashes involving pedestrians; persons involved in fatal crashes involving a pedestrian; deaths from crashes involving a pedestrian, and pedestrians killed in crashes.

Each metric was then given an individual weight to provide each city with a score scaled out of 100.

Philadelphia found itself at the top of the list of safest U.S. cities for pedestrians with 1.18 pedestrian fatalities per 100,000 residents in 2022.

“Philadelphia has become a haven for pedestrians because the city has taken seriously the task of creating safe streets for walkers,” the study reads.

Highlights for this include the Vision Zero plan, which aims to get Philadelphia’s traffic deaths reduced to 0 by 2030, launching a Safe Routes Program, and a creating a Pedestrian Safety Action Plan.

Rounding out the top five for safest U.S. cities are Bakersfield, Milwaukee, Fresno, and Detroit.

On the other hand, the top five most dangerous cities for pedestrians were Boston, Minneapolis, New York, Fort Worth, and Los Angeles.
