Dr. Maddie Herman, an Assistant Professor and Sport Management Program Coordinator at Gwynedd Mercy University, recently spent a month in Europe, immersing herself in some of the most significant international sporting events of the summer, according to a staff report from GMU.

Dr. Herman’s journey spanned three countries and provided her with unique professional experiences that will enrich her role as an educator.

Her first stop was in London, where she attended Major League Baseball’s London Series featuring the Phillies and New York Mets. The event brought American baseball to European soil, offering a unique opportunity to observe how a distinctly American sport is received and adapted in an international context.

Dr. Herman then traveled to Scotland to attend the prestigious British Open. The Open, one of golf’s oldest and most renowned tournaments, offered her the chance to meet and interact with some of the sport’s top professionals, including Tiger Woods, Xander Schauffele, and Scottie Scheffler.

Schauffele, who went on to win the Open, signed his glove and gave it to Dr. Herman at the 18th hole at Royal Troon Golf Club.

Dr. Herman’s final destination was Paris, where she volunteered with Team USA at the Summer Olympics and met Philadelphia native Dawn Staley, the University of South Carolina women’s basketball coach and three-time national champion.
