With Sales Up, Wawa Is Taking Over More of the Region’s Grocery Retail Business

Wawa and Wegmans had the biggest increase in sales last year among grocery retailers in the Philadelphia region, writes Ryan Mulligan for Philadelphia Business Journal.

Wawa had the second largest sales increase, with a $76 million bump in revenue for the Philadelphia area.

The Delaware County convenience store chain pulls in local sales of $2.35 billion, according to Food World’s annual market study.

It ranks third in market share among stores that sell groceries in the Philadelphia area, according to Food World.

The study tracked sales and market share between April 1, 2023 and March 31, 2024 in the Philadelphia region.

It covers Delaware, Chester, Montgomery, Bucks, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania; and Burlington, Camden and Gloucester counties in New Jersey.

Giant Co. was at the head of the pack for market share, with 15.94 percent of the Philadelphia market.  It was followed by ShopRite with a 14.29 percent, then Wawa, with 10.98 percent.

They were followed by Acme, with a 9.25 percent market share, CVS, at 6.92 percent, Walmart, at 6.65 percent, Target, at 4.17 percent, Wegmans at 3.92 percent, BJ’s Wholesale Club at 2.74 percent, and Aldi, with a 2.49 percent market share.
