Wawa Closes Port Richmond Location, One of the Oldest in Philadelphia, After 45 Years
Wawa closed one of its oldest Philadelphia locations in Port Richmond on Tuesday, July 9, writes Ryan Sharrow for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
The store had been open for over 45 years.
“While this was a very difficult decision to make, we have determined that this store cannot deliver the experience customers deserve or continue to meet performance expectations,” an official Wawa notice reads. “And while this location will close, it in no way impacts our continued commitment to the Philadelphia community.”
The notice also stated that all employees at the recently shuttered store have been offered the opportunity to work at another Wawa location.
This is the eighth Wawa location to close in Philadelphia area since 2020.
Another location, near Fairmount and the Philadelphia Museum of Art, is also set to close soon.
In addition to closing many of its store, Wawa has also begun experimenting with a new store format.
Its location on Drexel University’s campus was recently converted into a fully digital experience without shelves. Instead, all items are purchased on the Wawa mobile app or on the in-store touch screens.
Wawa has also recently embarked on a push to expand into the Midwest, breaking ground on its first locations in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana, last month.
