Residents of Quakertown recently faced a series of five power outages within 24 hours, all due to an unexpected culprit: a single squirrel, writes Jess Rohan for the Bucks County Courier Times.

Last month, parts of the borough experienced repeated outages traced back to the rodent, which chewed through a wire near St. Luke’s Joint and Bone Institute, according to borough manager Scott McElree.

The chewed wire caused a grounding issue that repair crews struggled to pinpoint. The problem was finally located behind the Giant grocery store at routes 309 and 313, about a mile away.

Grounding, a process where excess electricity is directed into the earth, is crucial for maintaining electrical systems. While trees are the leading cause of power outages in Pennsylvania, squirrels are also significant contributors.
