As the summer in Bucks County continues to bring high temperatures, parents are urged to be cautious when taking their children to playgrounds, writes Jo Ciavaglia for the Bucks County Courier Times.

Scientific research shows that playground equipment can heat up to dangerous levels, posing a risk of first or second-degree burns.

The National Program for Playground Safety (NPPS) reports that equipment can reach surface temperatures up to 189 degrees Fahrenheit in hot weather.

Shading these surfaces cuts the temperature nearly in half.

To protect children during a heatwave, parents should look for playgrounds with shaded equipment and perform a touch test before allowing kids to play.

It’s best to avoid equipment facing south and west during peak temperatures and opt for light-colored equipment and surfaces.

Ensuring children stay hydrated and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing is also crucial.

Bucks County offers several shaded playgrounds, including Bristol Township Municipal Park, which features a spray and splash pad, Playwicki Park in Lower Southampton, Hansell Park in Doylestown Township, Core Creek Park in Middletown, Burpee Park in Doylestown Township, Peace Valley Park in Doylestown Township, and more.
