Philadelphia entrepreneur Sarela Herrada found her place on the “Most Intriguing Women Entrepreneurs” in the nation list recently published by Inc., writes Ryan Mulligan for the Philadelphia Business Journal.
Katy Perry, Natalie Portman, and Billie Jean King are among other women who made the list.
Herrada, who grew up on a chicken farm in Peru, is the founder of sustainable food brand SIMPLi. Her goal is to create a food supply chain with a primary focus on sustainability.
SIMPLi sells some of the organic pantry staples such as quinoa, olive oil, and various beans. The company partners with around 3,000 farmers in South America and Europe who prioritize regenerative practices.
Just in 2023, the company’s retail footprint increased by 144 percent and its year-over-year revenue doubled. SIMPLi has 35 employees, which is also twice as many as 18 months ago.
The company has its products in over 4,400 stores and restaurants around the country, including Whole Foods Market and Sprouts Farmers Market, as well as food co-ops across Philadelphia.
Herrada and her husband Matt Cohen co-founded the company in 2020. She is currently pursuing her MBA at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
