Doylestown Township Adopts “Lights Out” Program to Protect Migrating Birds

Doylestown Township is joining the growing movement to protect migrating birds by reducing light pollution. The township’s Board of Supervisors recently adopted the Lights Out program, urging residents and businesses to turn off or dim lights between 11 PM and 5 AM, according to TapintoDoylestown.

The Lights Out program, supported by the National Audubon Society, aims to reduce the confusion and fatalities among the bird population caused by artificial light.

The organization estimates that light pollution kills approximately 1 billion migrating birds each year. Key migration periods occur from August 15 to November 15 and April 1 to May 31.

To further support the initiative, the township recommends replacing traditional lights with orange or red bulbs, which are less disruptive to birds. This initiative follows Doylestown Borough’s similar ordinance adopted in September 2023 and aligns with efforts in over 50 major U.S. cities, including Philadelphia
