Peter Zale, Associate Director of Conservation Horticulture and Plant Breeding at Longwood Gardens, has been honored with the prestigious Philip E. Keenan Award by the American Orchid Society.

This accolade recognizes his outstanding contributions to orchid conservation, underscoring a career dedicated to preserving these enchanting plants.

The Philip E. Keenan Award, named after a luminary in the field and a founding member of the North American Native Orchid Society, celebrates individuals who show exceptional dedication and accomplishment in conserving orchids.

Peter Zale’s recognition speaks volumes about his commitment and innovative approaches within this specialized realm.

At Longwood Gardens, Chester County’s top tourist destination drawing over 1.5 million visitors annually, Zale spearheads an orchid research program that’s at the forefront of conservation horticulture.

His work includes leading a team that delves into plant exploration, breeding, and managing living collections, with a particular emphasis on orchids native to the United States.

Through initiatives like seed banking, seed germination techniques, and the restoration of orchid populations, he has made significant strides in the conservation of these botanical wonders.

This award not only highlights Zale’s influential role at Longwood Gardens but also his broader impact on global conservation efforts. “We thank the American Orchid Society for this honor and for recognizing our efforts to conserve orchids both in the wild and within garden settings,” Zale commented, expressing enthusiasm for continuing this vital work.

Each year, the American Orchid Society presents the Philip E. Keenan Award to two distinguished first-place recipients, along with two runner-ups, celebrating their contributions with both recognition and monetary awards.

This process involves careful nomination and approval by the society’s board, ensuring that only the most dedicated individuals are honored.

Longwood Gardens, where Zale’s has worked since 2017, stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of Pierre S. du Pont. From its origins in 1906, when du Pont saved historic trees on a small farm, it has grown into a world-class horticultural display.

The recent acquisition of Longwood at Granogue, adding 505 acres to its conservation landscape, marks another milestone in its mission to blend nature’s beauty with educational and conservational initiatives.
