Ten years into his career as a CNN political commentator, Doylestown native Michael Smerconish remains independent.

Ten years into his career as a CNN political commentator, Doylestown native Michael Smerconish remains independent, writes Victor Fiorollo for Philadelphia Magazine.

In an interview, the journalist reflects on his career and alliances across the political spectrum.

Despite his early start with the Republicans, he found himself supporting Barack Obama.

Today, Smerconish hosts a three-hour morning show on SiriusXM and a Saturday morning show on CNN, but it’s his approach to Sundays—his only day “off”—that perhaps best encapsulates his dedication to his profession and personal life.

He also served fifteen years at the Inquirer, spanning over a thousand columns and resulting in a book that reflects on a hundred of them.

With a career that could have been laden with prime-time slots—having been a reliable fill-in for prominent hosts—Smerconish say he embraces his role as a perennial “sixth man,” focusing instead on fostering dialogue that transcends partisan lines.
