Reflections on Margaret Kuo’s, a Main Line Dining Legacy

Margaret Kuo’s Wayne location closed in March after 22 years of culinary excellence, writes Michael Bradley for Main Line Today.

The restaurant debuted in 2002 and it was tough going for a while to get local patrons used to a more sophisticated version of Asian cuisine.

Today, the restaurant is praised for everything from spring rolls to sushi to its wine list.

“It’s something Margaret and I have put our hearts into. We wanted to build something unique that would last.,” said Margaret’s husband, co-owner Warren Kuo.

Margaret Kuo was born in Manchuria but moved to Taiwan when communists took over China. Cooking was in her family. Her grandfather cooked for an empress in China.

“I had recipes handed down from generation to generation,” Margaret said. “I learned from my mother and grandmother.”

She has tried to offer authentic Asian cuisine, similar to what she had growing up.

Margaret Kuo plans to publish a book about her experiences and the many connections she’s made.

“For the past 40 years, I’ve lived my life with our customers. I’ve shared joy and sadness. I don’t want to just write recipes. I have a lot of stories.”
