The Independence Seaport Museum has officially transferred ownership of a portrait from 1815 to the historic Andalusia estate in Bensalem.

A majestic estate near Bensalem, otherwise known as Andalusia, has recently reopened for the season, writes Melissa Jacobs for Main Line Tonight.

This property offers over 50 acres of meticulously landscaped gardens, splendid Delaware River vistas, and a restored house that sparkles with the elegance of the Gilded Age.

Andalusia was once home to the Biddles, a prominent Philadelphia family.

Constructed in 1797 as a summer retreat, Andalusia was a haven during Philadelphia’s yellow fever outbreaks. The Federal-style architecture originally featured modest accommodations but has since been transformed into a grand estate with sweeping views of Philadelphia’s skyline.

Today, under the leadership of John Vick, formerly with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Andalusia is gaining recognition through a delicate yet effective marketing strategy aimed at enhancing visitor numbers and appreciation for its historical and botanical significance.

Visitors can explore the gardens independently or join a guided tour of the house, highly recommended to fully appreciate the estate’s cultural and aesthetic offerings.
