The Village Players at Freedom Village raised $4,000 for outreach and scholarship funds from their 4th musical.

Freedom Village at Brandywine’s Village Players, a group of resident actors, premiered their fourth musical, “Oh! Horrors, It’s Murder,” directed and produced by Fran Doyle and Maggie Doyle, also Freedom Village residents.

“The Village Players give residents an opportunity to get involved in something new and unique at the community,” Doyle said. “Everyone who joins, regardless of experience, always has a wonderful time, and Fran and I look forward to the many musicals to come.”

“We always tell the residents who participate that the purpose is to have fun, but in having fun, it is also a healthy exercise. It improves your mind by memorizing, your body by moving, and your lungs by singing.”

The Village Players’ musicals are comedies, typically one and a half to two hours long, including an intermission.

Both matinee performances of “Oh! Horrors, It’s Murder” over a weekend, one on Friday and one on Saturday, had jam-packed audiences filled with residents, staff, friends, and family.

The Village Players do not charge for tickets. They do accept donations, which are split evenly between the Freedom Village Scholarship Fund and the Freedom Village Outreach Fund.

The “Oh! Horrors, It’s Murder” performance raised $4,600, which will be split between the two funds.

“We are proud to have Fran and Maggie as residents here at Freedom Village. With these musicals, Fran and Maggie are able to support an amazing cause while doing something they love,” said Freedom Village at Brandywine Executive Director Danielle Geyer. “We are always impressed with them and the other residents who dedicate themselves and their time to putting on the best performance they can.”
