The three-year contract includes hiking pay by three percent for existing firefighters, and the hiring of two new lieutenants.

The union, which represents eight firefighters, agreed to increase its coverage to 12 hours a day for seven days a week.

The number of firefighters will also increase to 12 thanks to a $1.5 million grant that was awarded to Newtown last fall.

Candidates for the positions are currently being interviewed.
