Let’s Play Books Bookstore in Emmaus, one of the most popular local bookshops in the Lehigh Valley, could be closing for good after a decade in business, writes Tanya Basu for The Morning Call.

“I’m getting emotional even talking about this,” said owner Kirsten Hess. “We’re struggling with what to do with Let’s Play Books.”

The bookshop, which has weathered many storms since opening, will use the celebration of its tenth anniversary this weekend to survey community members on what they would like to see happen with the store. There are several possibilities for the future, but closing is currently the strongest one.

“We have pretty much everything on the table,” said Hess. “We could move locations, or make this one just one floor instead of three.”

That would reduce costs associated with theft that often happens on the two unsupervised floors.

Reasons for potential closure include the challenging retail landscape, especially for the book business, and the opening of The End: A Bookstore, Let’s Play Books’ sister location in South Whitehall Township.

“Eighty percent of our shoppers have chosen The End as their bookstore,” said Hess.
