The Independence Blue Cross Foundation has launched a first-of-its-kind nursing education pathway program for military veterans. The IBX Foundation Service Scholars Program offers area nursing schools funding to enhance educational benefits offered by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Yellow Ribbon Program at participating schools.

The IBX Foundation Service Scholars Program expands on more than a decade of the IBX Foundation’s commitment to improve educational opportunities for a more diverse and prepared nursing workforce. Through the IBX Foundation Service Scholars Program, veteran students will be eligible to receive scholarships and non-tuition aid along with support beyond the classroom, including career development opportunities and one-on-one mentoring. The program complements national efforts to support military veterans returning to civilian life.

Pennsylvania is projected to have a significant shortage in its healthcare workforce, with the need for nurses alone expected to increase by nine percent by 2030. This new initiative will address this gap by accelerating qualified and committed veterans into the nursing workforce.

“A career in nursing allows veterans to transition to civilian life while continuing to serve their country and live their values,” said Lorina Marshall-Blake, President of the Independence Blue Cross Foundation. “We’re excited to work collaboratively with our nursing school partners to support veteran student success on campus and ultimately enhance our healthcare workforce with highly-skilled nurses.”

The IBX Foundation will announce the recipients of the new funding opportunity in early 2024.
