An Outstanding in the Field event in East Hampton, New York.

This year’s Outstanding in the Field event in Philadelphia was held at FarmerJawn’s five acres at Elkins Estate in Elkins Park and Laura Brzyski of Philadelphia was there for the experience.

The mission of the table-to-farm events run by Outstanding in the Field is to support local farmers, chefs, and restaurant owners. The dinners are held across the country and the world.

Started by Jim Denevan, an artist and former chef originally from California, in 1999, they are held on farms so guests can dine at the source of their meal.

The menus are filled with dishes created fresh from the farm as well as local wines and ciders.

This year’s event was the second one that FarmerJawn, an urban agricultural organization founded by Christa Barfield, hosted. Chef George Madosky and staff at Fork prepared the multi-course dinner.

Dishes highlighted produce grown by FarmerJawn as well as cheese, protein, and other ingredients from other local farms like Lancaster Farm Fresh Cooperative, Birchrun Hills Farm, and Green Meadow Farm.

FarmerJawn’s mission is to increase access to organic food to marginalized communities.

“Agriculture is the culture,” Barfield said. “We should have one complete food system, [which] is what real health care looks like.”
