Philadelphia took the top spot in Pennsylvania among counties with the highest income inequality, according to a new report by Forbes.

Philadelphia took the top spot in Pennsylvania among counties with the highest income inequality, writes Andrew DePietro for Forbes.

Forbes used data from the Census Bureau’s 2021 American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates to determine the county with the highest income inequality for each state, as measured by the Gini index. The Gini coefficient measures the inequality of the distribution.

Philadelphia County, which covers the entire city of Philadelphia, was the number one county with the highest income inequality in the Keystone State.

The median household income in the county is $52,649, while the mean household income stands at $77,454.

With a Gini Index of 0.5178, the county has income inequality that is worse than the nation’s overall level, but this is still more equal than most of the other counties that took the top spot in their respective states – it ranked at No. 28 on the list of 50.

Nearly 11 percent of households earn under $10,000 per year, while 48.1 percent of households earn less than $50,000 per year.

Meanwhile, 27.7 percent of households earn $50,000 to $99,999 per year and the remaining 24.1 percent of households earn $100,000 or more.
