Wawa has launched a pilot program to test its first electric delivery truck through a partnership with Penske Logistics based in East Greenville, writes Emma Dooling for Philadelphia Business Journal.

The convenience store chain and Penske Logistics will be studying the performance of a Freightliner eCascadia battery-electric truck over a six-month period.

Wawa President Brian Schaller said that during the pilot program they will learn more about the EV technology and explore ways it can be applied to a larger portion of the company’s delivery fleet.

“This truck, on average, makes stops at 10 Wawa stores. We now have 1,000 stores. Wawa can make a difference. We need to explore things like this to see how we can do that,” he said.

The company doesn’t yet have a timeline for the rollout of additional electric trucks. Determining how much money will need to be invested to develop and maintain the trucks will be a major factor.

This first electric truck will be making deliveries to Wawa locations in Greater Philadelphia. The truck has a range of 225 miles and will charge each night, Jeff Jackson, Penske’s Executive Vice President of Operations, explained.
