Governor Josh Shapiro visited Maple Point Middle School in Langhorne last week to join students for breakfast and highlight the universal free breakfast program, according to a staff report from the Latrobe Bulletin.

Shapiro made the program a priority in his first budget address.

“I proposed providing free breakfast to Pennsylvania students in my first budget address because I believe our children need to start the day with a nutritious meal – and I know they can’t learn on an empty stomach,” said Shapiro.

While meeting with students and educators at Maple Point Middle School, Shapiro was joined by state Senator Frank Farry and state Representatives Joe Hogan, John Galloway, Tim Brennan, and Kathleen Tomlinson, as well as Bucks County Commissioners Robert Harvie and Diane Ellis-Marseglia.

The 2023-24 budget allocates an additional $46.5 million for universal free breakfast to Pennsylvania students along with free lunch to all 22,000 students eligible through the National School Lunch Program for reduced-price lunches. The budget will ensure that close to 1.7 million students across the state – including more than 76,000 students in Bucks County – receive free breakfast.
