Arcadia University Students Embrace World of Collegiate Esports
Over the last decade, the esports industry has grown in leaps and bounds, especially on college campuses.
Many colleges across the United States now have esports programs, including Arcadia University in Glenside, writes Ira Porter for The Christian Science Monitor.
Sean Ey, a junior computer science major, is on the esports team at Arcadia.
“I’ve played video games since I was 4, so it’s been a massive part of my life,” he said.
“I’ve met so many people, and to be able to do it in this style and play at such a competitive level, it’s great.”
College students interested in esports can now get scholarship money to compete. In 2022, approximately $16 million was awarded in esports scholarships in the U.S.
Schools offering esports find that it can be a big draw for prospective students.
“The benefit of having an esports program at a university is obviously it’s going to drive enrollment,” said Nick Alverson, director of esports at Arcadia.
Some of the most popular games in competition include Super Smash Brothers, Rocket League, Call of Duty, and Rainbow Six Siege.
