The importance of employee mental health is a prevailing issue, and many people often sideline their emotional well-being for the sake of their work, writes Jason Zickerman for Entrepreneur Magazine. However, being successful while also having a sound mind can exist in tandem with each other.

Dr. Martin Seligman, a leading figure in positive psychology and professor at the University of Pennsylvania, introduced the concept of PERMA to allow employees to take control of their mental well-being.

This model encapsulates the essence of mental health through the following areas: Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment.

Positive emotions extend beyond mere happiness, encompassing feelings such as love, joy, and hope. By fostering a culture of gratitude and recognizing achievements, businesses can infuse these emotions into their environment.

Engagement is about immersing oneself fully in an activity. This can be promoted by offering growth opportunities and encouraging active participation in tasks.

Relationships, being the bedrock of human existence, emphasize the importance of meaningful connections. Leaders should champion strong interpersonal bonds and collaborative efforts within their teams.

Meaning in one’s work and life adds a layer of purpose. It’s essential for businesses to ensure that their mission and vision resonate with their teams, providing avenues for them to support causes they are passionate about.

Sence accomplishment bolsters mental well-being. By setting clear goals and celebrating milestones businesses can cultivate a culture of accomplishment.

By weaving the principles of the PERMA model into their fabric, businesses can create a harmonious environment that prioritizes the mental well-being of everyone involved.
