The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is planning on addressing the persistent dangerous shortage of parking spaces for large trucks by adding 63 more parking spots over the next two years, writes Jonathan D. Salant for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

The commission has already added 194 of these parking spaces at four service plazas in the last 15 years. The new parking spots will be constructed in a fifth area.

However, even with the planned addition, the commission is not close to providing enough large parking spaces for the growing number of truckers who need a place to park during the night. In addition, there is no room left to build more spots at existing service plazas.

“It seems like the only answer we’ve ever heard from folks is to build more spaces,” said Peter Kurdock, general counsel for Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety. “In the areas with the most need, building additional spots where it makes a meaningful impact may not be a reality.”

The need for more spaces is being driven by the growing number of fatalities in crashes that involve large trucks, some of which are blamed on tired truckers. Read more about the issue in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
