Richboro Synagogue Teacher Uses Sports to Get Students Excited About Learning
Marla Gelfont, a religious school teacher at Ohev Shalom Synagogue in Richboro and Spanish teacher at Northeast High School in Philadelphia, is getting her students excited about learning by incorporating sports into her lesson plans, writes Dave Uram for KYW Newsradio.
“It gets the kids to actively want to learn,” she said.
With the Eagles and Phillies giving their fans much to root for in the last year, Gelfont is making sure to take full advantage of it.
Gelfont, who teaches fifth graders at Ohev Shalom, found a Hebrew word search that is compatible with the fifth-grade level. She then asked her students to find Hebrew words pertaining to baseball.
She has also brought in Eagles-related stickers to her class, had her class make sport-related posters, and even held pep rallies.
“The best things that I’ve ever learned are when I didn’t even realize I was learning them,” said Gelfont. “So when you have fun things that they can relate to, it makes it a lot more fun than just trying to learn something flat out of a textbook.”
