A charitable organization in Bucks County is working to help people in a foreign country affected by recent natural disasters.

Pearl S. Buck International is looking to gather donations in order to repair homes affected by rainy seasonal flooding in the Philippines.

“Your generosity can ensure that sponsored children and their families living in Ormoc, Leyte, Philippines can make the necessary repairs to their houses to keep dangerous rainy season leaking and flooding at bay,” the organization said online.

Donations of $125, $250, $375, and $500 are suggested, but any donation will be accepted.

The nonprofit works to preserve the memory and legacy of author Pearl S. Buck, who called the Perkasie estate her home for many years. Known for her 1931 novel, The Good Earth, which documented life in rural China, Buck was known for her advocacy of the adoption of Chinese-born children, making her one of the first Americans to advocate mixed-race adoption.

Her novels brought a level of awareness of Chinese culture to an American audience; throughout her life, Buck lived in the country herself, residing in Zhenjiang and Nanjing under the name 赛珍珠 (Sai Zhenzhu).
